The Summer of Cowboys and Indians is a series of 8″ x 10″ x 2″ mixed media panels that incorporate still images from a super 8 film, pages from 50’s era stamp books, spray paint and epoxy resin. I shot the original film footage in 1999, as a kind of diary of a short summer trip home.
In 2010, when I was digitizing the film for my website, I was struck by the changes that have occurred in my own family since that footage was shot. While that time seems frozen in nostalgia, each frame of the film began to represent the first line of it’s own story. Cowboys and Indians was first presented in a grid, 4” apart, 3 high by 6 wide, with each panel approximating the size and scale of a book.
