This book project was the result of a residency at Honokaa High School, on the island of Hawaii where I taught photography to girls ages 14-17.The images combine sections of their writing assignments with photographs taken during this class. The curriculum was inspired by photographer Wendy Ewald who is famous for her “collaborative works with children” and started the Literacy Through Photography program in North Carolina. This was a project of the Artist in Residence Program of the North Hawaii Community Learning Centers and was made possible by a grant from the Atherton Family Foundation.
